Woodrow Wilson appears in a reviewing stand in this glass negative, a reminder of how often presidents took part in parades and public ceremonies. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio that documented the capital's public life in the early 1900s, made pictures like this for newspapers and buyers. Wilson served from 1913 to 1921, and the negative's 1909 to 1919 date range covers most of that period. Herbert A. French gave the glass to the Library of Congress in 1947, and its surface shows streaks from the natural decay of the original coating.
