A ship named Betsy Bell, photographed just after her launch at the Virginia Shipbuilding Corporation yard in Alexandria on May 24, 1919. The picture dates to the wartime shipbuilding rush, when federal officials pushed yards to launch merchant vessels as quickly as they could be built. The National Photo Company made this glass negative, which came to the Library of Congress as a gift in 1947, and its faint streaks and blemishes reflect the natural deterioration of the original coating.
