Gunston Hall, the Georgian plantation house on Mason Neck in Fairfax County, Virginia, was the home of George Mason, who drafted the Virginia Declaration of Rights in 1776 and shaped the federal Bill of Rights. This glass negative comes from the National Photo Company, a commercial firm that photographed American landmarks in the early twentieth century for postcards and publications. The house was still being recognized as a historic site in these years, and the image records its brick facade and setting before its later restoration and public interpretation. The surface of the negative shows streaks and blemishes from age, which are typical of glass plates from this period.
