Gunston Hall, the Georgian plantation house on Mason Neck in Fairfax County, Virginia, was the home of George Mason, who drafted the Virginia Declaration of Rights in 1776. This glass negative comes from the National Photo Company, a commercial firm that photographed American landmarks in the early twentieth century, and its record dates the image only to between 1910 and 1925. The house was in a period of preservation interest then, and the surface streaks visible in the negative reflect the natural decay of its original coatings, a reminder of how fragile these early plates are.
