Gunston Hall, the Georgian plantation house on Mason Neck in Fairfax County, Virginia, was the home of George Mason, who drafted the Virginia Declaration of Rights in 1776. This glass negative comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., firm that photographed the capital and surrounding sites in the early twentieth century, and the image dates from roughly 1910 to 1925, when the house was drawing growing attention as a preserved colonial landmark. The negative shows the age of its emulsion, with streaks and blemishes from deterioration of the original coating.
