Hull No. 3 at the Virginia Shipbuilding Corporation, photographed on April 25, 1919, documents a vessel from a yard on the Potomac at Alexandria. The company was one of many wartime builders that the U.S. Shipping Board's Emergency Fleet Corporation relied on to replace merchant tonnage lost to submarine attacks, and this picture was taken only months after the Armistice, while the program was still producing ships. The negative came from the National Photo Company, a Washington commercial studio whose work covers the capital and its surroundings in the 1910s and 1920s. Faint streaks across the glass come from deterioration in the original coating, not from the scene itself.
