Few places in Virginia were photographed as often as Mount Vernon, George Washington's Potomac estate, but this view is set apart by its label, the "Maine room." The Mount Vernon Ladies' Association had owned and cared for the house since 1858 and opened its rooms to a steady stream of visitors. The National Photo Company, which sold views of American landmarks to travelers, made this copy negative around 1921 or 1922, and the room title comes from its own unverified notes. The glass has since developed streaks and blemishes from the aging of its coating.
