A young man sits in a dormitory room, captured on an 8 by 6 inch glass negative whose specific school or building the record does not name. The plate belongs to the National Photo Company, a commercial Washington, D.C., studio active from the late 1890s into the 1930s that photographed the city's streets, buildings and people. Library of Congress staff devised the title, and the 1910 to 1920 date rests on neighboring negatives in the same range, so the picture is best read as a glimpse of student life in that decade. Streaks and blemishes on the glass come from deterioration of the original coating, which is worth keeping in mind when judging its tones.
