Packages of currency are stacked in the reserve vault of the cash room in the Treasury Department's Office of the Treasurer. The Treasurer of the United States oversaw the government's cash and the redemption of notes, so a room like this was among the most closely guarded spaces in Washington. The National Photo Company, which recorded many views of the capital in the early twentieth century, made interiors like this one for postcards and souvenirs. The date of 1914 comes from a related negative, and this glass plate shows the streaks and blemishes that often appear as its original coating ages.
