The title points to the Treasury Department's Office of the U.S. Treasurer, where a National Bank Redemption Agency handled the paying of cash to bank tellers. The picture comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., firm that documented federal agencies, buildings and daily government work in the early twentieth century. Its glass negative, dated [1914] in the catalog, is a copy made later and given to the Library of Congress in 1947, so the tonal streaks and blemishes visible in it come from the original plate coatings deteriorating over time. Such images show the clerical routines that moved paper money through the national banking system before the Federal Reserve took over much of that work.
