Riggs National Bank, one of the best-known financial institutions in Washington, D.C., is the subject of this glass negative, which the National Photo Company made sometime between 1910 and 1926. The bank had been operating in the capital since the 1830s and had become a fixture of the downtown business district by the early twentieth century. The National Photo Company documented the city's streets, buildings and institutions in those years, so the picture offers a record of how the commercial core looked before later redevelopment. Its surface shows streaks and other blemishes from the deterioration of the original coatings, which are part of what a viewer sees when studying the image.
