Few doors in Washington carried more weight than the twelve-ton steel door pictured here, which sealed the vault holding the distinctive paper used to print federal currency. Unprinted currency paper was a tightly controlled material, since it was valuable enough to need guarding long before any notes were printed on it. The picture comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington firm that photographed government buildings and city landmarks in the early twentieth century, and its date of about 1914 is inferred from a related negative rather than recorded on this one.
