A 6 ton clam, the steel grab bucket named in the title, stands at Northwestern Fuel Company's No. 2 dock, which the record places at Superior. Clamshell buckets like this one lifted bulk coal from lake freighters and dropped it into rail cars or storage piles, so the machine was the working heart of a dock like this. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., firm that sent photographers across the country in the early twentieth century, made the view around 1916 or 1917 to document cities, rail lines and industry. The glass negative shows streaks and blemishes from its coating breaking down over time, which add a faint texture to the scene.
