Captain John W. Downer of the Field Artillery appears in this 8 by 6 inch glass negative, one of the portraits the National Photo Company made in Washington, D.C., before the United States entered the First World War. The record dates it to about 1916 to 1917, when the Army was expanding and modernizing its artillery after the 1916 mobilization along the Mexican border. The title comes from data the company wrote on the negative or its sleeve and has not been independently verified, so the identification should be treated as provisional. Glass negatives of this age often show streaks and blemishes from deterioration of the original coating, which is worth keeping in mind when viewing the image.
