The record identifies the sitter only as Capt. Kopper, and that title comes from data the National Photo Company wrote on the negative or its sleeve, not from independent verification. The plate dates to roughly 1921 to 1922, when the Washington, D.C., studio was producing portraits and views on large glass negatives. Visible streaks and blemishes are typical of age-related deterioration in the original coatings, so the image may look hazier than it was when first made. The plate was a 1947 gift from Herbert A. French.
