Few pictures in the collection tie as directly to a moment in early aviation as this one, which pairs Dr. Hugo Eckener, the German commander of the Zeppelin airships, with Capt. George W. Steele. The record dates the negative to October 16, 1924, just after the ZR-3, later named USS Los Angeles, completed its flight from Germany to Lakehurst, New Jersey, as a delivery of reparations to the United States. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that made many news portraits of the period, produced the glass negative, which shows the streaks and blemishes that come with age as the original coating deteriorated.
