Hugo Eckener, the German airship commander who guided the Zeppelin company through its long-distance flights, is the subject of this 1924 glass negative from the National Photo Company. Eckener had piloted the LZ 126 (later named USS Los Angeles) across the Atlantic that same year, a crossing that made him a celebrated figure in the United States and helped establish airships as a serious means of transatlantic travel. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C. studio active in the early twentieth century, documented many newsworthy visitors and events, and its glass plates now form part of the Library of Congress collection. The negative shows some streaking and surface marks from the deterioration of its original coating.
