A horse-drawn gun team was no longer the only way to move heavy artillery by 1918, and this image shows a tractor hauling a piece, titled for Secretary of War Newton D. Baker in July of that year. Baker led the War Department under President Wilson throughout the First World War. Tractors like this one pulled guns that horse teams struggled to move over mud and rough ground, and mechanized transport was becoming a more visible part of the American war effort. The picture comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that produced press photographs of officials and events in that era. Faint streaks and blemishes on the glass reflect the natural decay of its original coating.
