Washington's lawmakers were known to field teams and play baseball against one another in the years around World War I, and this glass negative records one such contest from 1918. The title comes from the National Photo Company's own notes, which the Library of Congress lists as unverified, so the teams and the exact occasion remain uncertain. The National Photo Company worked in the capital from the early 1900s into the 1920s, photographing government officials, public events and everyday city life. The negative shows streaks and blemishes from the slow breakdown of its original coating, which is typical of glass plates of this age.
