The title on this glass negative, "Agrl. Dept., Bureau of Chemistry," points to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's chemistry division, which in the early twentieth century enforced federal food and drug standards under the 1906 Pure Food and Drug Act. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., firm that documented government offices and federal life, made the image around 1920, though the date is inferred from negatives in the same range. The record notes streaks and blemishes from deterioration of the original coating, which are visible traces of the negative's age. The negative came to the Library of Congress as a 1947 gift from Herbert A. French.
