Nothing in the record names the man in this glass negative, and the title was devised by Library staff rather than the original maker. The plate is dated somewhere between 1909 and 1940, a period when the National Photo Company ran its Washington, D.C., studio and produced portraits and views of the city that now form a major part of the Library's holdings. Herbert A. French gave the negative to the Library in 1947. Look closely and you will see streaks and blemishes, the result of the coating on the glass breaking down over time, a common condition in negatives of this age.
