The sitter in this glass negative is unidentified, and the record raises the possibility that the image copies work by Julius Krentzlin. It belongs to the National Photo Company Collection, a body of negatives from a Washington, D.C., studio active in the early twentieth century and later given to the Library of Congress. Herbert A. French donated the plate in 1947, and the streaks and blemishes visible today come from the gradual breakdown of its original coating, a common fate of glass negatives kept for decades.
