The record gives this picture the title "Dela Storm," though the Library of Congress notes that the name comes from unverified information written on the negative or its sleeve, so it may not identify the subject with certainty. The image survives as a glass negative, a format widely used from the 1880s into the 1920s, when photographers coated plates with light-sensitive emulsion. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio active in the early twentieth century, made many such negatives, and its collection was given to the Library of Congress in 1947 by Herbert A. French. Streaks and spots on glass plates like this one often come from the slow breakdown of the original coating.
