What sets this one apart is its title, which credits the image to Stone & Poole, a name the record does not explain further. As a copy negative on glass, it was made by photographing an existing picture rather than the original subject, a common practice for studios that needed duplicates of popular views. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., firm active in the early twentieth century, produced and kept large numbers of such plates, and its collection came to the Library of Congress with a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947. Visitors may notice streaks and other blemishes, which reflect the gradual deterioration of the glass plate's original coatings over time.
