Rather than a view of a named place, this entry is a copy negative, a glass plate made from an earlier image and credited to J.M. McIntosh, though the library notes that this attribution is unverified. The National Photo Company, based in Washington, D.C., produced a large body of glass negatives from the early 1900s into the 1940s, documenting the capital and its surroundings. Streaks and other blemishes on the plate reflect the natural deterioration of its original coatings, which is worth keeping in mind when viewing it. The negative entered the Library of Congress as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947.
