A storefront bearing the McCrory name is the subject of this glass negative, which the National Photo Company dated to around 1919 or 1920. McCrory's was one of the many five-and-dime chains that spread through American cities in the early twentieth century, selling inexpensive household goods, notions and candy to everyday shoppers. Photographs of storefronts like this one preserve how retail signage and street frontage looked in that period. Viewers should also note the streaks and blemishes across the plate, which come from natural deterioration of the original coatings rather than from the scene itself.
