The title points to a storm on July 30, 1913, though the National Photo Company's own label for the subject is unverified, so the scene itself remains open to question. The company, which worked in Washington, D.C., in the early twentieth century, recorded city streets, public events and everyday life on large glass plates like this 8 x 10 inch negative. Sudden summer storms were a familiar part of life in the capital, and a dated plate like this one gives a useful glimpse of how the city looked that day. Look closely and you will see streaks and blemishes, the marks of deterioration in the original coating rather than of the scene.
