Few pictures in this collection show a full submarine crew posed on the deck, so this one stands out for its subject. The S-2 was one of the Navy's S-class submarines, a group of small boats built in large numbers during and just after World War I for coastal patrol and training. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio that documented American life from about 1900 to the early 1920s, made the glass negative in July 1921. The title comes from data the company wrote on the negative, so it has not been independently checked, and the faint streaks in the glass come from the natural breakdown of its original coating.
