Few sports pictures from the early 1920s survive on glass, which makes this 1921 view of a junior high school basketball team worth a closer look. The image was made on an 8 by 6 inch glass negative, a format that gave photographers of the period sharp detail but also left the emulsion open to flaking and streaking over time. The record notes exactly that kind of deterioration, along with the caveat that the title comes from unverified data supplied by the National Photo Company, the Washington firm whose large collection of news and commercial photographs now sits at the Library of Congress. The negative was given to the Library by Herbert A. French in 1947.
