Few details in the record name the players or the year, but the title points to a school band photographed during the early decades of the twentieth century. The National Photo Company, which operated mainly in Washington, D.C., from about 1907 to the 1940s, made a large body of street, school, and civic pictures during that period. This safety film negative came to the Library of Congress as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947. Its surface shows streaks and blemishes from the deterioration of the original coatings, which is worth keeping in mind when judging the image's tones and detail.
