Catalogued under the name National Woman's Party, this glass negative dates to about 1920 to 1921, just as the organization was turning from winning the vote toward new goals. The Nineteenth Amendment was ratified in August 1920, and the party, founded by Alice Paul and Lucy Burns, then pressed for an Equal Rights Amendment. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio that documented public life in the capital, made the plate, and Herbert A. French gave it to the Library of Congress in 1947. The streaks and blemishes visible on the glass come from deterioration of its original coatings, a common condition for plates of this age.
