A glass negative measuring 8 by 6 inches records the exterior of the National Engraving Co., and the title comes from notes on the negative or its sleeve that the record describes as unverified. The date of about 1919 or 1920 is inferred from other negatives in the same range. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio that documented the city's businesses and streets for decades, made the image. Herbert A. French donated the negative to the Library of Congress in 1947. Viewers will notice the streaks and blemishes that the catalogers attribute to deterioration in the original coatings.
