Crandall's Apollo, named in the title of this exterior view, carries the name of the Crandall theater business, which operated in Washington, D.C., though the record does not confirm this building's location. The National Photo Company, which documented streets, storefronts and public life across the capital and beyond in the early twentieth century, made the picture around 1920. Movie houses of that era often combined silent films with vaudeville or stage acts, and their façades were built to draw passersby. The glass negative shows streaks and blemishes from the deterioration of its original coating, which are part of its physical history.
