Mount Vernon, George Washington's Virginia estate on the Potomac, is the setting here, and this view comes from a glass negative made by the National Photo Company around 1926. That firm produced a large body of travel and landmark photographs for sale to visitors, and its negatives were later gifted to the Library of Congress, where this one was catalogued in 1947. The title and date come from the company's own notes and from neighboring negatives, so they are not independently verified. Visitors to the estate in that era often came by steamer down the Potomac, and the house and grounds were already a national shrine. Faint streaks on the glass are a common result of aging emulsion coatings.
