Roanoke Island in North Carolina is where Virginia Dare, the first English child born in the Americas, was born in 1587 during the ill-fated English colony. This glass negative, dated January 5, 1924, is credited to the National Photo Company, a commercial firm that photographed American landmarks and scenes in the early twentieth century. The record notes that the title comes from unverified information on the negative or its sleeve, so the identification is a likely reading rather than a confirmed one. Streaks and blemishes visible on the plate come from natural deterioration of the original coatings.
