Mount Gretna, a wooded ridge in Lebanon County, Pennsylvania, was a summer retreat and Chautauqua-style gathering place by the early twentieth century, and the Pennsylvania National Guard used its grounds for annual summer encampments. This glass negative, made by the National Photo Company in 1912, records one of those camps, though the title comes from unverified data written on the negative sleeve, so the exact unit and date are not confirmed. The National Photo Company was a Philadelphia-based commercial firm that photographed the region's events and places for sale and publication, and its large collection gives a useful view of rural Pennsylvania at the time. Surface streaks and blemishes on the glass come from the natural breakdown of its original coatings.
