A burial at Arlington National Cemetery in 1921 drew national attention when an unidentified American serviceman from the First World War was laid to rest there on Armistice Day, November 11. The body had been chosen from four unknown soldiers exhumed in France, and President Warren G. Harding attended the ceremony. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio that recorded events and places across the country, made glass negatives like this one, and the streaks and blemishes visible on the plate come from the age of its original coatings.
