This glass negative gathers the dress of four branches of the U.S. Army from 1858 to 1861: the general-in-chief's staff, engineers, artillery, and cadets. Winfield Scott held the post of general-in-chief throughout those years, just before the Civil War. The National Photo Company, a Washington firm that sold views and historical images in the early twentieth century, probably made the picture from older printed or drawn sources, since the negative dates to about 1908 to 1919. Streaks and blemishes on the glass come from the natural deterioration of its original coating.
