Two small boys in overalls stand on a dirt road, each steadying a load balanced on his head, and the pose draws the eye more than the empty road does. The picture belongs to the National Photo Company Collection, the work of a commercial firm that photographed American life in the early twentieth century, and it is dated to about 1920. Viewers should notice the streaks and blemishes across the glass negative, which come from natural deterioration of its original coatings and are common on plates of this age.
