Shipyard launches drew large crowds in the years after the First World War, when the United States was rebuilding its merchant fleet. This glass negative shows the launching of a vessel named for Collen H. Livingston. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., firm known for documenting the capital and national events, made the image, and its date of about 1920 is an estimate based on related negatives. The streaks and blemishes visible across the plate come from natural deterioration of the original coating, which is common in glass negatives of this age.
