A highway bridge is the subject here, one of the road crossings that multiplied as automobile travel spread across the United States between about 1909 and 1923. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., commercial firm, produced views like this one for postcards and publications, and Herbert A. French gave its glass negatives to the Library of Congress in 1947. The title comes from the company's own notes, which have not been verified, so the exact site remains uncertain. The negative shows streaks and other blemishes from the original coatings breaking down over time.
