Pennsylvania Avenue, photographed from the Capitol, stretches west in a long straight line toward the White House, the ceremonial route Pierre L'Enfant set out in his 1791 plan for the capital. The view comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington firm that recorded the city's streets and public buildings in the early 1900s for sale as postcards and souvenir views. The glass negative shows streaks and blemishes from the deterioration of its original coating, a flaw that softens the scene and reflects the fragile materials of the period.
