Calvin Coolidge, who became president after Warren Harding died in August 1923, is pictured at the Capitol in June 1924 as he signs bills passed by Congress. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented officials and public events in the early twentieth century, made the glass negative, which the Library of Congress received as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947. Viewers may notice streaks and blemishes on the plate, which come from the natural deterioration of its original coatings.
