Taken on May 9, 1924, this glass negative shows Calvin Coolidge less than a year after he succeeded the late Warren G. Harding as president in August 1923. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio that recorded officials and public life in the early twentieth century, made the image, and Herbert A. French gave the negative to the Library of Congress in 1947. Note the streaks and blemishes across the glass, which come from natural deterioration of the original coatings. The title comes from information written on the negative or its sleeve and has not been independently verified.
