Calvin Coolidge, pictured here in a 1924 glass negative, belongs to the National Photo Company's large collection of Washington-area news and portrait work from the early twentieth century. The date comes from caption data written on the negative or its sleeve, and the record notes it has not been independently verified. Coolidge was president at the time, having taken office after Warren G. Harding's death in 1923 and seeking his own term that year. Glass plates like this one were the working medium of press photographers of the era, and the faint streaks and blemishes visible in the emulsion are signs of age in the original coating rather than problems introduced later.
