In Warrenton, Virginia, this glass negative records a monument to John Singleton Mosby, the Confederate cavalry officer known as the "Gray Ghost" for his guerrilla raids across Northern Virginia during the Civil War. Mosby settled in Warrenton after the war and practiced law there, so the town holds a lasting connection to his postwar life. The National Photo Company, which made a large body of town and landscape views in the years around 1918 to 1921, likely recorded the memorial during that period. Faint streaks and blemishes on the glass reflect the age of the original coating, but the composition of the monument and its setting remain legible.
