Pictured is Speaker Gillette beside a bust, photographed on December 27, 1920, according to the title on the negative sleeve. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented officials, Congress and public life in the 1910s and 1920s, made the picture on a glass plate, a format widely used for press and portrait work of the period. The record does not identify the bust's subject or the occasion, so the sitter's setting is open to interpretation. Viewers should also note the streaks and blemishes on the plate, which the catalog attributes to natural deterioration of the original coating.
