Frederick H. Gillett of Massachusetts presides over the House of Representatives as the 67th Congress opens on April 11, 1921. The session convened in special session after Warren G. Harding took office as president in March, and it marked the start of a Republican-led Congress returning to Washington after the 1920 elections. The photograph comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented the capital's officials, buildings and events in the early twentieth century. Its glass negative records the formal opening of the session.
