Harry M. Daugherty, an Ohio political operator and close ally of Warren G. Harding, took the oath as attorney general on March 5, 1921, the day after Harding's inauguration. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that recorded officials and public events in the early twentieth century, made this glass negative, which captures a formal moment as the new cabinet took office. Viewers should note the streaks and blemishes across the glass, which come from the natural deterioration of the original coatings rather than from the scene itself.
