Little is recorded about the sitter beyond his name and state, and the title comes from data the National Photo Company wrote on the negative or its sleeve, which has not been independently verified. The plate dates from roughly 1918 to 1921, when the Washington, D.C., firm was producing large numbers of portraits and views for clients and the press. Glass negatives like this one were the standard working medium of the period, and their coatings often deteriorated over time, which explains the streaks and blemishes across the surface. The Library of Congress received the negative as a 1947 gift from Herbert A. French.
